Chair's Welcome

Welcome to the UGA Department of Computer Science web site. Established in 1984, the department has a growing, dynamic, research-oriented faculty who take great pride in their longstanding record of excellence in research and in undergraduate and graduate education. This academic year, we are a faculty of 20, covering a broad range of research interests, including distributed information systems, human-computer interaction, databases, vision and image processing, theory, algorithms, bioinformatics, scientific computing, parallel and distributed computing, real time systems, virtual reality, evolutionary computing, and artificial intelligence.

As of Fall 2006, we had approximately 210 undergraduate majors and just under 100 graduate students. We offer the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science. We also teach some 1,200 students in service courses. Our Department is a unit within the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. The Franklin College is the oldest college within the University, from which not only the University of Georgia originated, but also the whole University System of Georgia.

The University of Georgia is the nation's oldest state university, having been chartered by the Georgia legislature in 1785. With the current enrollment close to 34,000 students, UGA ranks as one of the top universities in the nation. Our faculty include the 1998 Pulitzer Prize winner for history, as well as several members of such prestigious organizations as the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Engineering. For the past several years, UGA has attracted excellent students (the 2007 freshman class had an SAT average of 1233). The University's academic reputation, low total costs, as well as very good graduation and retention rates have resulted in notable rankings. US News & World Report placed UGA 20-th among the top public universities (U.S. News & World Report 's 2008 "Best Colleges" issue), while both US News & World Report and Kiplinger's Magazine ranked UGA as 10-th among the Best Values in Public Colleges. The University is located in Athens, a charming and historic college town of 110,000, approximately 65 miles from metropolitan Atlanta, with mild winters and warm summers.

Thank you for visiting us on the web.
