Manuscript Form for Master's Thesis: Submitting
Journal Articles as Chapters
A Master's Thesis in the Computer Science Department may optionally
be written in Manuscript Form with approval from the student's major
professor.
In the manuscript form, a theses may include, as chapters, articles
that have been submitted to journals. A master's thesis must include
at least one such article.
Such a thesis must also include an introduction, that defines the
objectives of the research, and a concluding chapter that ties together
the major results. Unavoidably, this will duplicate some of the introductory
and concluding material in the articles.
The individual manuscripts serving as chapters in the thesis need
not all have the same internal structure. Instead, each is typed in
the style appropriate to the journal, except that practices peculiar
to submission of manuscripts to editors (extra spacing, short pages,
special paper, etc.) must be eliminated.
The student must be the first author of each article used. The names
of all authors, in journal submitted order, and the name of the journal
(with volume, page numbers and date if known) must be given as a footnote
to the title on the first page of each manuscript, so as to indicate
the current status of each manuscript. The manuscripts cover page,
including footnote format, must conform to the style of the sample
page in the Student Guide to Preparation and Processing booklet.
Continuous pagination is required throughout the dissertation or
thesis. The usual requirements for margins, consistency in chapter
or section titles, and other mechanics as specified elsewhere in this
guide will apply. Reprints or photocopies of reprints are not acceptable.
