TopCoder is the main arena for online programming competitions. They hold weekly competitions in which competitors from around the globe participate. Also, twice a year they hold tournaments where finalists get to compete on site in an exciting location (Disney World & Las Vegas this year).

TopCoder is a great way to get your foot in the door at many of the companies that sponsor competitions, including the NSA, AOL, UBS, and Bloomberg

TopCoder is more than just algorithm competitions, they also have competitions in program design and development, as well as marathon matches where coders have two weeks to solve a given problem and compete for the best implementation of the solution.
