Take-Home Final Exam

Spring 2007

Due: Thursday, May 10th

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment, which will be counted as a final exam grade, is to develop an in-depth understanding of topic of current interest in HCI. One excellent way to learn a topic is to be asked to teach it. While you won't be asked to orally present this information, you should prepare the following:

a set of teaching materials suitable for a 30-minute lecture or self-guided tutorial. Lecture format should use powerpoint slides, with both the presetation slide and the "notes" pages filled in. The notes pages should contain material such as a more detailed description of what is on the slide, background info, or explanations that a lecturer presenting the slide might give. Of course, not every slide needs an explanation, but most should have the notes data filled in.
A self-guided tutorial should consist of a set of related HTML pages, prepared by the student (not merely cut-and-pasted from the web), with 30 minutes of material on the submitted pages and links out to related online resources. It should be submitted as a zip file or tar ball.
a list of 3 or more supplementary materials: readings, web pages, or other online resources that relate to this topic, with a short abstract of the material found at each resource. This should appear at the end of tutorial or slide presentation, in a section labeled "supplementary materials". In the case of the web-based tutorial, this can include sites linked-to in the body of the tutorial.

Please choose one of the following topics, or suggest another topic that is of interest to you. Have your topic approved by the instructor prior to beginning work on the assignment, as no duplicate topics will be permitted.

How to get started: See the program for CHI2007: Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. Find the paper sessions or sessions that match your topic (some will have exact name matches, others may not). Browse the papers in that section, and follow-up at the web sites of the authors and their research labs. Look at related work. Don't just present the content of the paper. This should be a tutorial on the overall topic.
