The Challenges of Spam (and Spam Bots)
Spam is not just the junk message in your mailbox. It is a much broader problem that has evolved to all the new media, including instant messaging (SPIM), social networks (Spam Profiles), Internet telephony (SPIT). It is likely the worst part of the Information Explosion problem.
The fight against spammers and their systems is not limited to content filtering but every aspect of information system. The root of the spam problem is deeply at the design philosophy of the computer and network systems, which was to produce high-speed and low-cost information processing and dissemination. Along with many colleagues and students, we has studied related topics from fighting web spambots, to improving spam filtering performance using an extended bloom filter, and to building privacy-aware collaboration to fight spam as well.
High Speed Traffic Classification
Our research is to enable new classification paradigms for network traffic. This research investigates techniques that enable statistical classifiers, semantic-aware classifiers to be applicable to high speed network traffic (more updates will come).
