PREREQUISITE:

Proficiency in Java programming.

This course overs the basics of UNIX systems programming, including file and directory structures, basic and advanced file i/o, process creation, and interprocess communication. An initial unit on "C++ for Java programmers" will familiarize students with the use of C and C++ in systems programming.

The de facto standard C++ reference book, which you may wish to refer to is: The C++ Programming Language , Special Edition, Stroustrup. The 3rd edition is also acceptable. This is an intermediate to advance level text book.

Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment, W. Richard Stevens, 1992. This is a great systems programming book.

UNIX System Programming, Second Edition, Keith Haviland, Marcus Gray and Ben Salama, 1998. This gives you UNIX in a nutshell, used to be a required text but is now printed outside the USA (England), according to the University Bookstore.

The purpose of the assignments is familiarization of concepts and details of C++ and UNIX system programming. The assignments are individual projects. However, you are encouraged to ask questions of one another, and to respond to other student's questions. Direct exchange of code is prohibited, as is line-by-line assistance. This is checked for every assignments

No outside assistance is permitted (exceptions: instructor or TA).

Unless otherwise specified, exams are closed-book and no additional materials may be used.

Missing an exam: absence due to serious illness will be an acceptable reason for missing an exam. Doctor's diagnostic note is required. The final grade will be scaled accordingly.

Assigned homework (if any) must be typed, you must also email a copy to the class email account.
