First-year students majoring in computer science, data science, or computer engineering now have the chance to explore one of the world’s leading tech capitals through Connect Abroad Immerse: World of Computing. This newly launched spring-break program takes students to London in 2026 for a hands-on, one-credit experiential learning adventure that blends technology, history, and global perspective.

Students will explore London’s tech landscape. A global powerhouse in technology and innovation, London is the perfect destination for students eager to explore the future of computing. Program highlights include a visit to Google’s Pancras Square Office to learn about cutting-edge developments; a tour of Bletchley Park, the historic site where Alan Turing cracked the Enigma Code; informational sessions with tech professionals and industry leaders; and a mixer with London-based UGA alumni to build connections and community.

Students will explore the past, present and future of computing – gaining a deeper understanding of computing’s evolution and its global impact through a guided tour of London’s iconic landmarks; a visit to Oxford University, showcasing the UK’s rich academic heritage; insights into cryptography and wartime computing at Bletchley Park; and exposure to real-world tech environments and career pathways.

The program is led by Dr. Bradley Barnes, a dedicated professor of computer science and undergraduate coordinator for the School of Computing. With a Ph.D. in parallel computing and a passion for student success, Dr. Barnes is committed to creating transformative learning experiences that inspire the next generation of computing professionals.

This program is designed specifically for first-year students studying computer science, data science, or computer engineering. The Connect Abroad Immerse: World of Computing program offers real-world insights to global tech culture, supports participant community and confidence, and sparks curiosity and a global mindset early in the college journey. Students are able to use Hope/Zell funding and other scholarships towards the program. In just one week, program attendees will:

  • Earn 1 academic credit
  • Fulfill their Experiential Learning requirement
  • Travel with a faculty member from the School of Computing and an academic advisor, forming valuable mentoring relationships that can last throughout their time at UGA
  • Connect with their peers within the computer science major, expanding their UGA network
  • Add an international experience to their resume - a great way to stand out when applying for internships, scholarships, or future study abroad opportunities

Spaces are limited with a September 20 deadline for applications. More information about the program is available here. Information about scholarship support through the Office of Global Engagement and the Office of Experiential Learning is available here.
